Connecticut: A Little State with a Lot to Discover

Connecticut may be one of the smaller states, but don’t mistake that for a lack of things to discover. From charming New England towns and coastal communities to historic landmarks, college-town charm, and a surprising number of places worth pulling off the road for, there’s plenty packed into the Constitution State.

Whether you’re exploring its history, chasing a little pop-culture nostalgia, or simply seeing where the day takes you, Connecticut might just surprise you.

Our Connecticut Adventure

Our time in Connecticut may have been short, but we managed to pack quite a bit into our visit. After flying into Hartford, we spent the following day on a Gilmore Girls tour, visiting several places that inspired the show or became unofficial landmarks for fans. For anyone who loves the series, it was a fun way to experience a little piece of television history while exploring the area.

From there, we hit the road toward New Haven and made an unexpected stop at a brewery tucked away in the middle of nowhere. It wasn’t exactly a planned destination, but those are sometimes the stops that make a road trip memorable.

Once in New Haven, we spent time walking around Yale’s beautiful campus before heading downtown for dinner. It was a great way to wrap up a day that had taken us from small-town nostalgia to college-town scenery and local food and drink.

We only had one full day to experience Connecticut, but it left a lasting impression. In fact, it’s already landed in our top five states we’d love to revisit. That’s a pretty good sign that we barely scratched the surface.

What You Could Experience in Connecticut

Connecticut is a state that rewards a little wandering. You can spend the morning exploring a historic coastal town, the afternoon discovering a world-class museum, and the evening enjoying a memorable meal in a lively downtown. Whether you’re interested in history, scenic New England towns, food, or a little pop-culture nostalgia, there’s plenty to add to your itinerary.

Follow the Gilmore Girls trail. For fans of Gilmore Girls, Connecticut offers a chance to explore some of the places and inspirations connected to the beloved series. Washington Depot is often associated with the inspiration for Stars Hollow, and nearby towns offer plenty of that charming New England atmosphere. Even if you’re not a fan of the show, the picturesque town centers and independent shops make this part of the state worth exploring.

Explore Mystic and the Connecticut coast. The coastal town of Mystic is one of Connecticut’s best-known destinations. Visit Mystic Seaport Museum to experience the state’s maritime history, explore the Mystic Aquarium, browse the shops and restaurants downtown, or simply enjoy the waterfront. Nearby coastal communities offer more charming stops, scenic views, and classic New England character.

Discover New Haven. Home to Yale University, New Haven combines beautiful architecture, college-town energy, museums, and a surprisingly impressive food scene. Walk around Yale’s campus, visit the Yale University Art Gallery, and make time to experience the city’s famous pizza scene. New Haven is a great place to spend an afternoon exploring before settling in for dinner.

Step into Connecticut’s history. History is woven throughout the state, from the Mark Twain House & Museum in Hartford to historic homes, maritime landmarks, and charming colonial-era communities. You can also visit Gillette Castle State Park, an unusual and memorable castle overlooking the Connecticut River.

Find your own New England escape. Head toward the Litchfield Hills for rolling countryside, small towns, antique shops, and scenic drives. Explore the Connecticut River Valley, take a ride on the Essex Steam Train, or spend time along the shoreline. Sometimes the best way to experience this part of New England is to slow down and enjoy the scenery between destinations.

Eat, drink, and explore. Connecticut has plenty to offer when it comes to local food and drink. New Haven is famous for its pizza, but you’ll find independent restaurants, seafood spots, bakeries, and breweries throughout the state. Leave a little room in your itinerary for an unplanned stop—you never know when a brewery in the middle of nowhere might become part of the story.

From coastal towns and historic landmarks to college campuses and pop-culture destinations, Connecticut offers plenty of reasons to stay a little longer. And if our short visit was any indication, there’s a lot more waiting to be discovered.
